They belong to a group called Macronyx. These birds live in open country. They are insectivores, which means they eat insects. Most of them feed on the ground. They are often very colorful.

These birds have a very special way of moving. They have unusually long hind claws on their feet. Scientists think these long claws help them walk on grass. This makes it easier to move through their homes. Longclaws also build their nests on the ground. They lay up to four speckled eggs in these nests.

We have known about this group for a long time. An English naturalist named William Swainson introduced the genus Macronyx. He did this in the year 1827. He used the Cape longclaw as the type species. The name Macronyx comes from two Classical Greek words. These words mean "long" or "great" and "claw."

There are eight different species of longclaws in this group. The Yellow-throated longclaw lives in many places like Angola and Nigeria.
