Chat (bird)

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Chats are small birds that eat insects. They live in Europe and Asia. Many of these birds fly long distances to new homes. Scientists call this movement migration.

Scientists used to think these birds were thrushes. They belong to the Turdidae family. Now, we know they are different. Scientists used DNA analysis to check their inner code. This showed they belong to the flycatcher family, called Muscicapidae. This family includes the Saxicolinae subfamily. This group contains many different types of birds.

An Irish zoologist named Nicholas Vigors helped define this group. He introduced the subfamily in 1825. He used the name Saxicola as the type genus. Later, researchers looked at birds in other groups. They studied the genera Myophonus, Brachypteryx, and Heinrichia. These birds were once thought to be thrushes too. Molecular studies showed they are actually flycatchers.

There are many different kinds of chats. Some groups are very large. The genus Oenanthe has 31 species. The genus Ficedula has 35 species. Other groups are much smaller. The genus Irania has only one species. That bird is the white-throated robin. The genus Cinclidium also has only one species. That bird is the blue-fronted robin.

Other birds share the same name. Australian chats live in Australia. They belong to the honeyeater family. American chats live in America. They belong to the cardinal family. These birds are not closely related to European chats. There is also the yellow-breasted chat. It lives in North America. Its true family is still not fully known.
