People often call it the rufous nightingale. It belongs to a group of birds called chats. Scientists used genetic analysis to find its true family. This study showed it is actually a type of flycatcher. It looks like a thrush, but that is just convergent evolution. This happens when different animals grow to look similar.

The name comes from Old English words meaning night songstress. It is a very famous bird in many cultures.

The way the male bird sings is quite amazing. He uses whistles, trills, and gurgles to make music. Most males have a huge repertoire of different songs. They sing about 190 types on average. Some birds can sing up to 250 different song types.

Many males sing at night to find a mate. They also sing at dawn to defend their territory. In noisy cities, they sing even louder to be heard. This helps their beautiful songs reach other birds.

People have written about this bird for a long time. The name has been used for over 1,000 years. Many poets use the nightingale as a symbol for creativity. For example, John Keats wrote about them in his poetry. In the Romantic era, poets saw them as a muse. A muse is a source of artistic inspiration.
