They often stay in the same place all year. However, some birds move south when the weather gets bad or cold. They are very important in culture and are state birds for five different states.

This bird is famous for its amazing ability to mimic sounds. It can copy other bird calls and even electronic noises.

To eat, they act as omnivores, which means they eat many things. They eat insects like beetles, ants, and wasps.

They also eat fruit, berries, and even small lizards. During the winter, they switch to eating more fruit to survive. They might even drink water from raindrops on plants or sap from trees.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A Swedish zoologist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758.

He originally thought they were a type of thrush. His description used the name Turdus polyglottos. The current name comes from Latin and Ancient Greek. The word Mimus means "mimic" in Latin. The word polyglottos means "many tongues" in Greek. This name celebrates how many different sounds they can make.

There are three different types, or subspecies, of northern mockingbirds.

Mockingbirds are very bold and protect their families fiercely. During spring, males perform a boundary dance to claim their space.

They also sing many songs to attract a mate. When it is time to raise babies, both parents help build a nest.

They use twigs on the outside and soft moss or grass on the inside. They will even chase away large hawks or cats to keep their eggs safe.
