They also eat fruit, berries, and even small lizards. During the winter, they switch to eating more fruit to survive. They might even drink water from raindrops on plants or sap from trees.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A Swedish zoologist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758.

He originally thought they were a type of thrush. His description used the name Turdus polyglottos. The current name comes from Latin and Ancient Greek. The word Mimus means "mimic" in Latin. The word polyglottos means "many tongues" in Greek. This name celebrates how many different sounds they can make.

There are three different types, or subspecies, of northern mockingbirds.

The first is M. p. polyglottos, found in the eastern United States and Canada. The second is the western mockingbird, which is larger and lives near the Pacific coast. The third is M. p. orpheus, found in the islands like the Bahamas. These birds can live up to 8 years in the wild. In captivity, they can live much longer, up to 20 years.

This species is widely distributed across North America, including parts of the Caribbean and the Hawaiian Islands. They are known for being highly adaptable to different environments. They often live in open woodlands, forest edges, and open areas with sparse vegetation. They are also very common in urbanized areas like parks and gardens.

Because they are so common, they are listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

One of the most remarkable traits of the northern mockingbird is its ability to mimic sounds.

They do not just copy other bird calls. They can also mimic artificial and electronic noises. This ability is even reflected in their scientific name. The genus name Mimus comes from the Latin word for "mimic." The specific name polyglottos comes from the Ancient Greek words for "many tongues." This name honors their ability to use many different sounds. Studies show they can even identify individual humans. They use these learned assessments to decide how to treat different people.

These birds are omnivores, meaning they eat both animals and plants.

Their diet includes many types of arthropods, such as spiders, grasshoppers, wasps, and beetles. They also eat earthworms, small crustaceans, and even small lizards. During the breeding season, their diet relies heavily on animal prey. However, they undergo a drastic shift in the fall and winter. During these colder months, they focus much more on eating fruits and berries. They enjoy eating things like blackberries, raspberries, and even tomatoes or apples. This shift toward fruit may help them expand into new geographic areas.

There are three recognized subspecies of the northern mockingbird.

The first is M. p. polyglottos, which lives in eastern North America from Nova Scotia to Texas. The second is the western mockingbird, or M. p. leucopterus. This subspecies is found from Nebraska to the Pacific coast and is larger than the eastern version. It has a shorter tail and more buff-colored feathers. The third is M. p. orpheus, found in the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles. This subspecies is smaller and has a paler gray color on its back. These birds can live up to 8 years in the wild, but they can live up to 20 years in captivity.

History shows that the range of the mockingbird has changed over time.

Swedish zoologist Carl Linnaeus first described the species in 1758. He originally classified it as a species of thrush called Turdus polyglottos. Since the 19th century, the mockingbird has expanded its range northward into Canada and parts of the United States. In the western United States, they were once restricted to the Lower Sonoran Desert. However, by the 1970s, they had become residents in most counties. Humans have also introduced them to several islands, including Hawaii in the 1920s.

Mockingbirds are famous for their intense social and reproductive behaviors.

During the spring, males arrive early to establish territories. They may perform a "boundary dance" to contest edges with other males. This involves hopping side to side on the ground. To attract females, males perform various courtship displays. These include running around their territory and singing complex songs.

While they are often monogamous, some birds may have more than one mate during their lifetime. Females are known to evaluate the quality of males and their territories quite closely.

Both parents work together to raise their young. The male performs most of the nest-building work. The female watches from a nearby shrub to protect the site from predators. The nest is built between three and ten feet above the ground. It uses twigs for the outside and soft materials like moss or grass for the inside. The female lays three to five light blue or greenish eggs. She incubates them for about 11 to 14 days. Once the chicks hatch, both parents provide food. The young become independent after about 10 to 15 days.

Finally, mockingbirds are known for being incredibly bold defenders. They will aggressively protect their nests from almost any intruder. This includes domestic pets like cats and dogs. They will even target much larger birds, such as hawks.

They can even be bold enough to target humans. If a predator is a constant threat, mockingbirds may even use special calls to summon neighbors to help defend the area. This communal defense shows how vital their territory is to their survival.
