Scientists study many different types of mockingbirds. There are about 17 species in two groups called genera. One group is called Mimus. The other group is called Melanotis. The Mimus genus contains many different species. These include the White-banded mockingbird and the Northern mockingbird. Other members are the Brown-backed, Bahama, Long-tailed, Patagonian, Chilean, and Tropical mockingbirds. The genus also includes the Chalk-browed and Socorro mockingbirds. The species formerly classified as Nesomimus include the Hood, Galápagos, Floreana, and San Cristóbal mockingbirds. 
The Northern mockingbird holds a special place in North American culture. It is the only mockingbird species commonly found on the continent. This bird has become a significant symbol for several U.S. states. In 1920, the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs proposed making it a state bird. In January 1927, Governor Dan Moody approved this proposal. Texas became the very first state to ever choose an official state bird. Since that time, four other states have followed this tradition. Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee have all adopted the Northern mockingbird as their state bird.

He also noted they were closely related to mockingbirds found on the South American mainland. 
These observations led Darwin to a major scientific realization. He speculated that the differences in mockingbirds, along with his observations of Galápagos tortoises, could challenge the doctrine of species stability. This was his first recorded expression of doubt regarding whether species were immutable, or unchanging. These thoughts eventually helped convince him of the transmutation of species. This process of change is known as evolution. The study of these birds thus connects ornithology to the very foundations of modern biological theory.
