Mynas are interesting birds from the starling family. They are found in many parts of Central Asia and South Asia. You can find them in Iran, Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. They also live in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Some mynas have moved to new places like Australia and North America. The common myna is known as an invasive species in these areas.

These birds have a very specific way of living. They are medium-sized and have strong feet for perching. Their flight is both strong and direct. Mynas are gregarious, which means they like to live in groups. They prefer to stay in open country habitats. Most of these birds eat fruit and insects to stay healthy. Many species like to build their nests inside holes.

The name myna comes from the Hindi word mainā. This word comes from an even older word, Sanskrit madanā. Scientists say myna is not one single natural group. Instead, the name describes any starling found in the Indian subcontinent. These birds arrived in the area during two different times in history. The first group was related to the coleto and Aplonis lineages. A second group arrived millions of years later.

There are many different types of mynas to learn about. The Bali myna is very special but also very rare. It is critically endangered and nearly extinct in the wild. Other types include the Great myna and the Javan myna. You might also see the Indian pied myna or the Common myna. Some birds, like the common hill myna, are very good at copying sounds. They can even learn to mimic human speech when they are in captivity.

In Singapore, these birds are very common. People there sometimes call them "Selarang" in Malay. They also use the name "Teck Meng" in Chinese. You can see how they adapt to different places. Some mynas have dark feathers, but others have yellow head ornaments. This helps people tell different species apart. Learning about them helps us understand the many birds in our world.
