Most of these birds live in warm, tropical areas. They are very social and often live in large groups called colonies.

These birds have many interesting ways of living.

Most species build large nests shaped like domes. They usually lay between five and ten white eggs in these nests. Some species even build nests just for resting or roosting.

While most love the heat, some have adapted to cooler spots. For example, the red-browed finch lives in southern Australia. The mountain firetail lives in the highlands of New Guinea.

Today, the AviList records show there are 138 different species. These species are divided into 39 different groups called genera. This helps scientists keep track of how they are all related.

There is a huge variety in the size of these birds.

Studies show that estrildid finches are related to indigobirds and whydahs. These two groups split apart about 15.5 million years ago.

A study by Urban Olsson and Per Alström in 2020 found six major groups. These groups grew into different branches between 4.5 and 8.9 million years ago. This shows how life changes slowly over very long periods of time.
