Many people call them weavers, weaverbirds, or bishops. These names come from the way they build their homes. They use plants to weave intricate nests.

These birds are mostly found in the Old World. Most of them live in Africa south of the Sahara. A few species live in tropical parts of Asia. Some have even been moved to live outside their native lands.

Building a nest is a very busy thing that happens for these birds.

They use materials like grass, twigs, and fine leaf fibers. The nests can be many different shapes and sizes. Some birds weave very fine nests using thin strands of fiber.

Others, like the buffalo-weavers, make huge, untidy nests out of sticks.

The sociable weaver builds a nest that works like an apartment house. In these nests, 100 to 300 pairs have their own flask-shaped rooms. Most nests have narrow entrances that face downward to stay safe.

In many species, the male birds do most of the weaving.

They build these nests to show off to female birds. This is a way to lure a mate. Many males have bright colors like red, yellow, or black. Some birds only show these bright colors during the breeding season.

These birds also like to live in large groups. They breed in colonies to stay safe from danger. They often build many nests together on a single branch.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time.

A Swedish zoologist named Carl Jakob Sundevall introduced the family name in 1836. We believe these birds first appeared during the mid-Miocene period. Their common ancestor lived about 18 million years ago.

Recent studies by Thilina de Silva in 2017 and 2019 looked at their DNA. These studies helped scientists understand how the different groups are related. There are 16 genera and 122 different species in this family.

Weaverbirds are easy to recognize by their round, conical bills.

These bills are perfect for eating seeds. Some birds, like the red-billed quelea, can even cause damage to crops. The red-billed quelea is very special because it is reputed to be the most numerous bird in the world.

You might see weaver colonies living close to bodies of water. Just like people build houses to live in, these birds use their weaving skills to create safe homes.
