Bulbul

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bulbuls are medium-sized songbirds that belong to the family Pycnonotidae. This family includes many different kinds of birds like greenbuls and bristlebills. You can find these birds in many parts of the world. They live across most of Africa and the Middle East. They also live in tropical Asia and as far north as Japan. Some species live on small islands in the Indian Ocean.

These birds have a very specific way they look. They have short necks and slender bodies. Their tails are long, but their wings are short and rounded. Most bulbuls have a beak that is slightly long and hooks at the tip. They come in many different sizes. The tiny greenbul is only 13 cm long. The straw-headed bulbul is much larger at 29 cm.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these birds. An English zoologist named George Robert Gray introduced the family in 1840. He first called them a subfamily of the thrush family. Since then, the way we group them has changed. In 2007, Ulf Johansson and his team used genetic studies to move some species. In 2017, Subir Shakya and Frederick Shelden found new ways to group the genus Pycnonotus.

Bulbuls are very busy and active living things. Most of them are monogamous, which means they have one partner. Some birds, like the yellow-whiskered greenbul, may have more than one partner. They build open nests in trees to lay up to five speckled eggs. The female sits on the eggs for 11 to 14 days. After that, the chicks grow and leave the nest in 12 to 16 days.

Finding food is an important part of their lives. Most bulbuls are frugivorous, which means they mostly eat fruit. They also eat seeds, nectar, and small insects. Some even eat very small vertebrates. Some birds live in thick rainforests in Africa. Other Asian bulbuls prefer to live in more open areas. While many bulbuls live well near people, about 13 species are threatened by losing their forest homes.
