Thrush (bird)

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Thrushes are a large family of birds called Turdidae. They live in many different places all over the world. Most of these birds are small or medium in size. They have soft feathers and often live in wooded areas. Many thrushes are grey or brown in color. You might notice speckled patterns on their underparts.

These birds spend a lot of time looking for food on the ground. They eat many things like insects and worms. They also enjoy eating land snails and fruit like berries.

Thrushes play a very important job in nature. When they eat fruit, they swallow the tiny seeds inside. Later, they pass these seeds through their droppings. This is a way for plants to move to new places. This process is called ornithochory. It helps plants grow far away from their parent plants. This can even help plants grow across big oceans. Some seeds might even stick to a bird's feathers or feet.

These birds have many different ways of making homes. Most thrushes build nests that are shaped like cups. Sometimes they even use mud to line their nests. They usually build these nests on a tree branch. Most thrushes lay between two and five speckled eggs. Both parents work together to help raise the young birds. There are a few exceptions to these rules. For example, three species of bluebird nest in holes.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A man named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque named the family in 1815. He called them Turdinia at that time. The family has changed as we learned more about them. For example, the chats and European robins used to be thrushes. Now, scientists call that group Old World flycatchers. Molecular studies show that thrushes are related to flycatchers. These two groups split apart about 17 million years ago.

There are 194 different species in the Turdidae family. These are divided into 17 different groups called genera. One large group is the typical thrushes, which has 105 species. Another group is the Asian thrushes, which has 22 species. There are also 13 species of American thrushes. Some groups, like the solitaires, have 13 species. Even the bluebirds are part of this big bird family.

It is amazing how many different kinds of thrushes exist.
