A peasant is a person who works in agriculture. They often have limited ownership of the land they farm.

In the past, many peasants lived under a system called feudalism. In this system, they paid rent or taxes to a landlord. This landlord might be a lord or a church leader. In Europe, peasants were divided into three main groups. Some were non-free slaves. Others were semi-free serfs. The last group consisted of free tenants.

Life for many peasants involved working in an open field system. This system was common in Europe for a long time.

Peasants lived on a large area of land called a manor. They shared certain areas like forests and pastures. This required everyone on the manor to work together. They worked the fields in exchange for the right to farm. Over time, this system changed to individual land management. This shift moved people toward owning their own plots.

History shows how much life changed for these workers. In the mid-14th century, the Black Death changed Europe.

Because fewer people survived, labor became very scarce. This allowed many workers to demand wages for their jobs. These changes helped lead to the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. In Russia, serfdom was officially ended in 1861. Before this, serfs made up about 45 to 50 percent of the people. By 1858, that number had dropped to 37.7 percent.

Different places had their own unique ways of living. In Germany, peasants often lived in villages and managed community resources.

In Bavaria, monasteries once controlled 56 percent of the land. In China, the term "nongfu" is used for farmers. Some Western writers used the word "peasant" to describe Chinese farmers. This sometimes created a negative image of their society. In Latin America, many rural workers are called "Campesinos." Many of them now own their own small farms after land reforms.

Today, the word "peasant" is used in different ways. In some cases, people use it as an insult. However, many groups use it to show respect.

The United Nations uses the term to talk about rights. They adopted a declaration for rural workers in 2018. An organization called Via Campesina represents 200 million farm workers. They call themselves an "International Peasant's Movement." This shows that the word can represent a strong community. It connects the history of farming to the modern world.
