These are places located outside of large towns and cities. Most rural areas have a low population density. This means there are not many people living close together. You will often see small settlements or tiny towns. These areas might include farms or big forests.

Many people in these places work with the land. They might focus on agriculture or forestry. Some people also work in resource extraction. This means they take materials like minerals from the earth.

Life in the countryside follows its own patterns. Rural economies often depend on the land. This can lead to boom and bust cycles. A boom is a time of plenty. A bust is a time when things are hard. Extreme weather can cause these changes. For example, a drought can make it difficult to farm. Some people move away from these areas to find work. This movement is called rural flight.

Younger people often go to cities for school or jobs. This can leave older populations behind in the rural areas. This shift can make it harder to provide services. It might be harder to find good healthcare or schools. In fact, three quarters of the world's poor live in rural areas.

Different countries have different ways to define rural areas. In Canada, a region is called predominantly rural if over 50% of people live there. These communities must have fewer than 150 people per square kilometre. In the United States, the term is also used for land outside cities.

About 10% of Germans work in agriculture, forestry, or fishing. In India, there are up to 500,000 villages. Many people there live by farming or pottery.
