"text": "Rural history is a special way to study the past. It focuses on the lives of people in the countryside. For a long time, this study was called agricultural history. That older field mostly looked at money and farming tools. It wanted to know how much food was produced. Today, rural history is much broader than that. It is the counterpart to urban history, which studies city life.

\n\nResearchers use many different tools to understand rural life. They do not just look at crops or money. They also look at social history and cultural history. This means they study how people lived and what they believed. In France, scholars use very many sources to learn. They look at family studies and medical reports. They even look at statistics and how people think. This helps them see the whole picture of the past.\n\nThis field became its own subject in the 1980s. It was inspired by a group in France called the Annales school. This school liked to mix economic, social, and political history together. In England, historians like Alun Howkins helped change the field. He wrote about the social history of the English countryside. Other experts, like Jeremy Burchardt, look at how culture shaped rural life. These scholars help us see that people made real choices.

\n\nDifferent places have their own unique rural stories. In the United States, much history focuses on the South. The South stayed mostly rural until the 1950s. In the North, farmers often focused on family and community. They did not always try to become big business owners. During the 20th century, new things changed everything. People got the Model T car and better roads. Electricity and the radio also arrived in rural areas.
