Urban history

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Urban history is a special way to study the past. It looks at how cities and towns grow and change over time. This growth is called urbanization. Experts do not just look at one thing. They use many different tools to learn about cities. They might study old buildings or look at items found by archaeologists. They also look at how people live and work together. This field helps us understand how the places we live were shaped.

Historians study cities in many different ways. Some focus on the "metropolis," which is a very large and important city. Other scholars look at small towns or suburbs. Small towns can be easier to study for some people. This is because they can use census data to see everyone in the town. Census data is a list of facts about a whole group of people. By using these lists, researchers can see how a whole population lived.

This field of study has grown a lot over the years. In the United States, many important studies began as student projects at Harvard University. Leaders like Arthur Schlesinger, Sr. and Oscar Handlin helped guide these students. The field grew even faster after the year 1970. One scholar named Stephan Thernstrom said that urban history is almost everywhere. It covers cities, the people in them, and even how people feel about cities.

Different parts of the world have their own stories. In Great Britain, historians began studying Victorian towns more in the 1960s. They looked at things like public health and how people worked. They also studied groups like women and people moving from other countries. In the United States, historians look at many types of cities. They study port cities on the coast, like Boston and Philadelphia. They also study cities that grew because of railroads, like Chicago and Denver.

Some writers even tell the story of a single city. These are called urban biographies. They look at everything from politics to how neighborhoods change. They might look at a "primate city," which is the largest city in a country. For example, some books tell the history of New York City or London. Other books look at how suburbs grew near big cities. This helps us see how people move and find new homes.
