This field includes many different topics. It covers how people fish and how they hunt whales. It also looks at how countries make laws for the ocean. Experts study how ships are built and how people navigate the water. They even look at how the sea is shown in art and books. This helps us understand our deep connection to the world's oceans and rivers.

Researchers study these things in different ways. Some historians focus on very small details of a ship. This is sometimes called "rivet counting." Other scholars look at the people who used the ships. They study how sailors lived and how they moved from place to place.

Some experts want to help leaders make better rules for the sea. Others focus on teaching other scholars. This variety helps us see the full picture of our watery world.

People have been using boats for a very long time. Some believe humans used rafts over a million years ago.

The Pesse canoe is one of the oldest physical boats ever found. It was made between 8040 and 7510 BCE. In Norway, very old rock art shows a boat over 10,000 years old. These early tools allowed people to travel between islands and lands. This was the start of a long history of sea travel.

Ancient civilizations used the sea to grow and trade. In Mesopotamia, people made boats from bundles of reeds. They used a special coating to keep the water out.

The Austronesian people were also amazing sailors. They used special sails and boats to travel across the Pacific. They reached places like Hawaii and New Zealand. They even traveled as far as Madagascar and Ghana. Their ships helped spread crops like bananas and coconuts to new lands.

Many famous empires also relied on the sea. Ancient Rome used many types of ships for war and trade. Some ships used oars, while others used sails.
