A maritime museum is a special place for exploring life on the water. These museums show objects related to ships and travel across large bodies of water.

Some museums focus specifically on navies and military use of the sea. We call these naval museums. The most exciting part is often a historic ship. When a real ship is used as a museum, it is called a museum ship.

These ships allow people to see history up close. They are very important for learning about how people traveled in the past.

Museums use different ways to show these treasures to the public. Some museums keep large ships outside for people to visit. Other ships are too fragile to stay in the wind and rain.

These delicate ships must be kept inside special buildings. For example, the remains of the Mary Rose are kept in a building made just for them. Museums also show smaller pieces of ships. You might see a cannon or a carved figurehead. They also display small items like uniforms and cutlery.

Many maritime museums have long histories of their own. Some museums are very large and cover many different buildings. The Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent, UK, is a very big site. It is the best preserved dockyard from the Age of Sail. It includes a ropewalk that is 1/4 mile long.

There are also spinning rooms, dry docks, and three historic warships there. In the United States, Mystic Seaport in Connecticut is the largest maritime museum. It preserves many original seaport buildings and sailing ships.

There are many famous maritime museums located all around the world. In the UK, the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holds the uniform worn by Horatio Nelson.

In Europe, the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa is the largest in the Mediterranean. Many museums are part of the International Congress of Maritime Museums. This group helps members work together to find and save items. In Asia, you can find the Kobe Maritime Museum in Japan. There are also many museums in Africa, such as the Alexandria Maritime Museum in Egypt.

Maritime museums help us connect the past to the things we know today. They preserve ancient vessels so they can be studied by experts.

This helps everyone learn about how ships were built and used. Some museums even build replicas, which are new ships made to look like old ones. This is because there are not many original ships left to show. Some museums even have a museum harbour. In places like Germany and the Netherlands, people can watch historical vessels moored in the water.
