A merchant ship is a vessel used for business. These ships carry cargo or passengers for hire. They are different from pleasure craft used for fun. They are also different from naval ships used for war. Merchant ships come in many shapes and sizes.

Some are small inflatable boats in Hawaii. Others are huge ships that carry 5,000 passengers. Some are tugboats in New York Harbor. Even submarines can carry passengers in the Caribbean. Many ships use a flag of convenience. This means they sail under a country's flag other than their owners' home. Liberia and Panama are examples of this.

Many merchant ships are cargo ships, also called freighters. They carry goods and materials between ports. These ships handle most of the world's trade. One type is a bulk carrier. These carry loose items like grain, coal, or cement. They have large hatches on the deck. These hatches can slide or fold to let cargo in.

Specialized tankers exist for different liquids. Some carry liquefied natural gas, or LNG. Others carry liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG.

History shows us how these ships have changed. In the past, ocean liners carried both people and mail. They had special gear like kingposts to move cargo. Today, many cruise ships have removed their cargo capacity. Some ships are also used during wars. These are called auxiliaries to the navy. They deliver military personnel and materials.

The Greek merchant marine is very important today. It is the largest international merchant fleet in the world. The Greek fleet accounts for about 16 percent of the world's tonnage. However, it is not the largest fleet in all of history.

There are many specific names for these vessels. Ships use prefixes to show their type. For example, MS stands for motorship. MT means motor tanker. A research vessel is called an RV. A steam ship is called an SS.

Tankers can be very different in size. Small tankers serve small harbors and coastal areas. Large ones are for long-range hauling. A supertanker is a very large tanker. The FSO Knock Nevis was once the largest vessel in the world. It had a deadweight of 565,000 metric tons. Today, some large oil tankers are called VLCCs. These ships can have a deadweight of 441,585 metric tons.

Merchant ships connect different parts of the world. They move things from one place to another. Some ships are coastal trading vessels. These are smaller ships that stay near the coast. They have shallow hulls to sail over reefs. Other ships are designed for blue-water trade. These have much deeper hulls to handle the open ocean.
