Cargo ships are the backbone of global trade. These merchant ships move most of the world's goods across oceans.

They carry many different things like materials and commodities. Some ships are small vessels for near coasts. Other ships are huge ocean-going carriers.

These ships are built to handle specific jobs. Some carry large metal boxes called containers. Others carry liquids or loose bulk goods. Modern ships are made of welded steel. They use cranes or gantries to load their heavy cargo.

There are different ways these ships work. One way is called the liner business. Liner ships follow a set schedule of ports. They act as common carriers for the public. This means anyone can book cargo to be shipped. Each trip a liner takes is called a voyage.

Another way is the tramp-tanker business. These ships do not have fixed schedules. Instead, owners hire them for specific jobs. This is often a private deal called a charter party. These ships can carry bulk dry goods or liquids. They will go to any suitable port in the world.

People have used ships for trade for thousands of years. In the ancient Mediterranean, Phoenician ships were very important. Around 1200 BCE, they used round ships called gauloi. These ships were made of cedar wood. They had a single square sail and used oars.

The Romans also built large cargo ships called naves onerariae. Some of these grain ships were over 50 metres long. They carried hundreds of tonnes of food to Rome. Later, the Byzantine Empire made ships lighter and faster. They even added a rudder at the back of the ship. This helped the ships turn much more easily.

Different parts of the world developed their own ships. In Northern Europe, Vikings used ships called knarrs. These were deep-hulled ships with a single square sail. They carried timber and furs across the North Atlantic.

Later, the cog became a very popular ship. Cogs had flat bottoms to sit upright at low tide. In Italy, cities like Venice and Genoa became powerful. Venice had a huge shipyard called the Arsenal. It was so efficient it could build a ship in one day. They used special convoys to keep their goods safe.

Understanding ship size is very important for sailors. Ships are measured by their capacity or tonnage. We also look at their weight, called deadweight tonnage.

The length and width of a ship are vital too. These measurements help a ship fit through canal locks. The depth a ship sits in the water is called the draft. A ship must have the right draft for shallow harbors. The height of the ship matters when passing under bridges. All these details help keep the global economy moving.
