These boxes are special because they work for many kinds of travel. This is called intermodal transport. It means the same box can move from a ship to a train. Then it can move from a train to a truck.

You do not have to unload the items inside during the trip. This makes moving products around the world very fast and easy. They act like a boxcar that does not have wheels.

Most containers work using a very smart design.

They are built with eight strong corner castings. These are metal parts on each corner of the box. They allow machines to lift and stack the containers. A tool called a twistlock connects to these corners to keep them steady.

This prevents the boxes from moving while a ship is at sea. Most containers are "dry freight" or general purpose boxes. These are simple, closed rectangular shapes made of weathering steel. This type of steel helps prevent rust.

People have been using containers for a long time.

In 1766, James Brindley designed a boat called the 'Starvationer'. It used ten wooden containers to move coal. By the 1830s, railways in the UK used timber boxes for coal too. In the 1950s, the modern way of shipping changed forever. An engineer named Keith Tantlinger helped design many parts of the modern container. He also worked on the machines that move them. A businessman named Malcom McLean helped start a big shipping company called Sea-Land.

Today, there are many rules to keep things organized.

Most containers follow ISO standards for their size and shape. This helps them fit perfectly on ships and trucks everywhere. In 2012, there were about 20.5 million containers in the world. Some containers are called "High Cube" because they are extra tall.

People also use the term TEU to talk about their size. This stands for twenty-foot equivalent units. Every international container must have a special safety plate called a CSC plate. This plate tells people how much the box can weigh.

Containers are a big part of our daily lives.

Most of the things you buy come in these boxes. In 2010, containers handled 60% of all sea trade in the world. They are much more common than older ways of moving goods. They work a lot like cardboard boxes or wooden pallets. They bundle many small items into one large, easy load. This helps the whole world trade with each other more easily.
