Freight train

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Freight trains are special trains used to move cargo. They do not carry passengers like other trains do. Instead, they move goods from one place to another.

These trains are great for heavy loads. This is because the rails have low friction. Low friction means there is less resistance when moving. This helps trains carry huge amounts of stuff over long distances.

A freight train works using locomotives and railroad cars. The locomotive is the engine that provides propulsion. Propulsion is the force that makes the train move.

The railroad cars are also called wagons. These cars are unpowered and carry the goods. There are many kinds of cars for different jobs. Some are tank cars for liquids or gases. Other types include boxcars, flatcars, or hopper cars.

People have moved goods on rails for a very long time. The earliest use was in Babylon around 2200 BCE. Back then, humans or horses pulled wagons on wagonways.

Later, steam locomotives became the most common way to pull trains. Starting in the 1920s, things began to change. Diesel and electric locomotives started to replace steam engines. These newer engines are more reliable and cleaner. They also cost less to run than steam engines did.

Freight trains move through a system of yards and paths. Many trains go to classification yards. These hubs receive incoming trains and break them up. Then, workers put the cars into new trains.

Some trains are called unit trains. A unit train carries only one type of cargo. These trains go directly from the start to the end. For example, a train might go from a coal mine to a power plant. This makes the trip faster and lowers costs. As of April 2020, North America had 1.6 million rail cars.

Freight trains do not always follow a fixed schedule. They often run only when they are needed. This is different from how passenger trains work.

Freight trains must share tracks with passenger trains too. To help everyone, they use specific times for their trips. They avoid the tracks during morning and evening rush hours. This helps minimize the impact on people traveling for work. Moving goods this way keeps our world connected.
