Freight train

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A freight train is a railway system designed to transport cargo. Unlike passenger trains, these vehicles do not carry people. Instead, they move goods across vast distances. Freight trains consist of one or more locomotives and many railroad cars. These cars are also called wagons. Because rail transport has low friction, it is very efficient. This makes trains ideal for moving heavy and bulk loads.

The movement of a freight train depends on two main parts. The locomotive provides the propulsion, which is the force that moves the train. The railroad cars are unpowered and rely on the locomotive for movement. These cars are specifically designed to hold different types of goods. There are many specialized types of freight cars available. For example, a tank car carries liquids or gases.

Other common types include boxcars, hopper cars, and flatcars. There are also covered hopper cars, centerbeam cars, and gondola cars. Specialized versions like the autorack or well car also exist for specific cargo.

Freight trains operate using different methods to deliver goods. Many trains use a system called wagonload or carload freight. These trains travel between classification yards. A classification yard acts as a hub for the railway. At these hubs, incoming trains are received and broken up. Workers then assemble the cars into new trains for different destinations.

This process allows many different types of goods to reach various locations.

Another method is the use of unit trains. A unit train is different because it carries only one type of cargo. These trains do not stop at classification yards to change their makeup. Instead, they operate directly between an origin and a destination. An example would be a train moving coal from a mine to a power plant.

Much later, the Stockton and Darlington Railway used trains in 1825. For a long time, steam locomotives were the most common power source. However, a major change began in the 1920s. Diesel and electric locomotives started to replace steam engines. These newer locomotives are more reliable and produce cleaner emissions. They are also much cheaper to operate.

Managing freight trains requires careful planning with other rail traffic. Unlike passenger trains, freight trains often do not follow fixed schedules. They are usually run as needed based on cargo demands. This can create challenges when sharing tracks with passenger services. To minimize impact, freight trains are scheduled for specific times. They often avoid using the lines during morning and evening rush hours. This helps ensure that passenger operations remain smooth and efficient.

Rail transport is a massive industry with huge numbers. As of April 2020, there were 1.6 million rail cars in North America. This scale shows how much the world relies on these systems. The ability to move massive amounts of material is essential for many industries. From energy to construction, freight trains connect the different parts of our economy. They remain a vital way to move the world's goods.
