A goods station is a special place for moving items by rail.

These stations handle things like parcels and manufactured goods. Workers use them to load or unload items from ships and road vehicles. Some stations only move goods between different types of transport. We call these transshipment stations.

These spots act as a bridge between the tracks and other paths.

Many tracks called sidings help the station do its work.

Some sidings have fixed tools like cranes or conveyor belts. Other stations use temporary tools like wheeled ramps for sugar beet. Container terminals are a special kind of goods station. They use large cranes and fork-lift vehicles to move metal boxes.

This makes it easy to move containers onto trains or lorries.

History shows us when these stations first began.

The world's first station built only for freight opened in 1830. It was called the Park Lane Goods Terminus. This station was located at the South End Liverpool Docks. It was part of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. That railway was also the first inter-city railway ever made. A long tunnel led to the station from Edge Hill.

Goods stations can be found in many different places.

Some sit next to passenger stations. Others are separate facilities on their own railway lines. Large stations often use marshalling yards to sort wagons. These yards act like a small hub for the railway. Some stations even have a hump yard to help sort things. Many stations in Europe have changed their names over time. In Germany, people call them a Güterbahnhof.

Things have changed a lot for these stations recently.

Many goods now travel by road instead of by rail. This shift caused many old goods stations to close down. Some were even demolished after they stopped working. Because of this, it is hard to bring rail services back. Most remaining stations now work as container or transshipment stations. They focus on moving big boxes rather than small parcels.
