Railway engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Railway engineering is a very big job. It covers the design and building of trains. Experts also work on how to run them. They must also find ways to fix them. This field uses many kinds of engineering. Civil engineering helps build the tracks. Electrical engineering helps with power. Computer engineering helps with the systems.

This work happens in many steps. First, engineers must design the whole system. Next, they begin the construction of the tracks. After that, they manage the operation of the trains. They also handle the maintenance of the lines. This means keeping everything in good shape. It is a way to keep travel safe.

Railways have changed a lot over time. In the 1700s, horses pulled small wagons. These moved on stone slabs or wood. But the wood wore out quickly. During the Industrial Revolution, people added cast iron. This helped the wooden parts last longer. Later, engineers used wrought iron and steel. These strong materials could hold heavy loads.

As trains grew, we needed special experts. These engineers solved unique problems. Some famous names include Richard Trevithick. George Stephenson was another important person. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was also very notable. These men worked in Britain. Today, many groups help engineers. The IMechE is in the UK. AREMA is a group in the US.

Many different parts make a railway work. Some experts work on railway signalling. This tells trains when it is safe. Others work on fare collection. This is how people pay for rides. Some design networks for the trains. They also use CCTV to watch for safety. Even public address systems are part of it. All these parts work together.
