Highway engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Highway engineering is a special kind of science. It focuses on making roads, bridges, and tunnels. Engineers must plan, build, and fix these paths. They also work to keep them running well every day. This job helps people move from place to place safely. It is a very important part of how our world works.

Building a road involves many careful steps. First, engineers must predict how many cars will use it. They also study how a road might change the land. This study is called an Environmental Impact Assessment, or EIA. An EIA helps find ways to stop pollution. It also looks for ways to protect plants and animals. Engineers try to fix any problems before they start.

Road building has a very long history. The Romans were among the first to build roads. As technology changed, roads had to change too. Old carriages were replaced by powerful vehicles. In 1930, the United Kingdom started the Transport Research Laboratory. In the US, a law in 1944 helped connect many cities. In 1958, Great Britain built its first motorway called the Preston bypass.

Engineers use specific numbers to keep us safe. They look at how fast a driver can react. They also check how far a driver can see. They must consider the size of large vehicles. This helps them decide how wide a lane should be. Safety is a huge job for them. Nearly 50 million people are injured in traffic accidents every year. This makes good design a very big task.

There are two main ways to make a road surface. One way is called flexible pavement. It often uses a dark material called hot-mix asphalt. This surface can bend slightly under a heavy load. These roads usually last between 20 and 30 years. The other way is called rigid pavement. It often uses Portland cement concrete. These roads are very strong and can last 30 to 40 years. They are great for big airports and heavy trucks.
