They do more than just lay down pavement. They must plan for future traffic. They also think about the earth. This is called an Environmental Impact Assessment, or EIA. An EIA is a way to study how a road might change nature. Engineers look for ways to stop air or water pollution. They also try to protect plants and animals.

Engineers must design roads to be safe for people and cars. They look at how fast a car can turn. They also look at how well a driver can see signs. This helps prevent accidents.

There are two main ways to build a road surface. One way uses flexible pavement. This often uses hot-mix asphalt, which is a dark, thick material. It is called flexible because it can bend slightly under a heavy load. These roads usually last 20 to 30 years.

The other way uses rigid pavement. This often uses Portland cement concrete. These roads are very strong. They can last 30 to 40 years. This makes them good for big airports and heavy trucks.
