A passenger train is a special kind of train used to move people. Instead of carrying goods like a freight train, these trains carry travelers along railroad lines.

Some passenger trains use a locomotive to pull unpowered cars called coaches or carriages. Other trains are self-propelled, which means they move on their own. These are called multiple units or railcars. Passenger trains stop at stations or depots so people can get on or off. Most of these trains follow a fixed schedule. They also usually have priority over freight trains on the tracks.

There are many different ways these trains work for different trips. Long-distance trains travel between many cities or even different countries.

These trains might have dining cars for meals or sleeping cars with beds. Some even use bi-level cars, which have two levels of seating to carry more people. High-speed rail is another type that runs very fast on dedicated tracks.

Some high-speed trains use tilting technology to stay stable on curves. This helps the ride feel more comfortable for the passengers inside.

People have been using trains to travel for a very long time. The first time a locomotive pulled a passenger train was in 1804.

This happened in Wales at the Penydarren Ironworks. A man named Richard Trevithick designed the engine for that trip. In 1807, the Swansea and Mumbles Railway opened with horse-drawn trains. The first steam train for the public ran in 1825 on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It could travel at speeds up to 15 miles per hour. Passenger travel became very popular in the United States during the 1850s and 1860s.

Many famous trains have been built to make travel better. In the 1930s, people developed streamliner trains to make services more exciting.

Commuter trains help many people get to work every day. They can carry much more than a bus or a car can. This makes them very efficient for moving large groups of people at once.
