Some trains are self-propelled. This means the railcars move on their own. Most trains use steel wheels on steel tracks. This setup has low friction. Low friction makes trains very efficient for travel.

Early trains used steam to move. Steam engines work by heating water. Later, people began using diesel and electric power. Diesel engines became popular because they are reliable. They are also easier to maintain than steam. Electric trains get power from electricity.

Some special trains use magnetic levitation. This is often called maglev. Maglev trains use magnets to float above a guideway. Floating helps them reach very high speeds. This is a very modern way to travel.

Trains have a very old history.

The earliest roots come from wagonways. These were paths made of stone. Babylon used these stone wagonways around 2,200 BCE. In the 1500s, people used them to move things from mines. In 1804, Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive. This changed everything for land travel. In 1825, the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened. George Stephenson ran a locomotive there called Locomotion No. 1. It carried over 400 passengers.

The United States opened its first steam railroad in 1829. By 1900, railroads worked on every continent except Antarctica. Different countries built their own special designs. In the 1960s, high-speed rail was first built. The Japanese Shinkansen started service in 1964. This was the first high-speed rail service. In 2000, the Acela started in the United States.

They are much more fuel efficient than cars. They also create fewer greenhouse gas emissions. This helps keep the environment healthy. Freight trains are great for moving huge amounts of goods. They move things like coal and grain. Using trains can also help reduce traffic on roads. This makes traveling easier for everyone.
