One big reason for this is energy efficiency. The tracks help spread the heavy weight of the train. This allows trains to carry much larger loads than trucks on a road.

Because the wheels meet less friction than rubber tires, cars can be coupled into very long trains.

How a train works depends on its power source. Most trains use diesel or electric locomotives to move.

It was used for over 650 years starting around 600 BC. Modern rail transport truly began in the United Kingdom. The steam locomotive was invented at the start of the 19th century. The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened for passengers in 1825.

Later, the Bessemer process made it cheap to create steel. Steel rails lasted much longer than iron rails. This allowed for much heavier locomotives and longer trains.

It also cost only one tenth of what a wagon trip cost. This made farming and mining much more profitable in the West. Today, trains are seeing a revival in many places. People use them to avoid crowded roads and rising fuel prices.
