A locomotive is a special vehicle that provides power for a train.

Most of the time, a locomotive pulls a train from the very front. However, some trains use a method called push-pull operation. Other heavy freight trains use distributed power to move huge loads. This means locomotives are placed at the front and the rear. They might even be placed at points in the middle of the train. All these engines stay under the control of the leading locomotive.

Steam locomotives were the most common type for a long time. They work by using a boiler to make steam.

First, the engine burns fuel like coal, wood, or oil. This heat warms the water in the boiler to create steam. Next, the steam moves reciprocating pistons. These pistons connect to the main driving wheels to make them turn. The engine carries its own fuel and water in tanks or a tender. A tender is a special car pulled behind the locomotive.

People have been building these machines for a very long time. Richard Trevithick built the first working steam locomotive in 1802. He built it for an ironworks in Shropshire, England. In 1804, a locomotive of his hauled a train in South Wales. Later, Matthew Murray built the Salamanca in 1812. This was the first commercially successful locomotive. George Stephenson also built the Locomotion No. 1 for a railway in England. His son Robert built the famous Rocket in 1829. The Rocket won the Rainhill Trials and became very famous.

Today, we use different kinds of engines like diesel and electric.

Diesel locomotives use an internal combustion engine to move. Hermann Lemp patented a great control system for these in 1914. This design helped create the diesel-electric locomotives we use now. Electric locomotives get their power from an outside source. They might use an overhead line or a third rail.

A pantograph is a hinged frame that touches the overhead wire. This helps the train get power even when it moves fast.

Switching from steam to new engines changed how the world works. Steam engines were expensive to run and required many workers. Between 1950 and 1970, most steam engines were retired. North America moved away from steam during the 1950s. Much of Europe finished this change by the 1970s. Electric locomotives are very efficient for modern travel. They often cost 20% less to buy than diesel ones. They can even cost 50% less to run every day.
