Most locomotives pull a train from the front. Some use a way called distributed power. This means engines are at the front and the back.

Steam locomotives were very common for a long time. They use a boiler to make steam. They burn fuel like coal or wood to heat water. The steam moves pistons. These pistons turn the large driving wheels.

Many people now use diesel or electric engines. Diesel engines use an internal combustion engine. This is a motor that burns fuel inside. Electric locomotives get power from an outside source. They might use an overhead line. They might also use a third rail on the ground.

Electric engines are often cheaper to run. They cost less to maintain than diesel engines. They can even cost 50% less to run. Some electric trains use a pantograph. This is a metal frame that touches the wire. It helps the train get power while moving fast.
