A resource is any material we use to satisfy our needs and wants.

These materials must be easy to reach and useful to our society. Some items only become resources when we use new technology to find them. Using resources well can lead to more wealth and better well-being for people. We can group resources in many ways, such as by where they come from. Some are found everywhere, while others are only in specific places.

Natural resources come directly from our environment. We can divide these into two main groups based on their origin. Abiotic resources are things that are not alive, like land, air, and minerals. Examples of minerals include gold, iron, copper, and silver. Biotic resources come from the biosphere, which includes living things. Forests, animals, birds, and fish are all important biotic resources. Some things, like coal and petroleum, are biotic because they formed from organic matter.

We also look at how fast a resource can be replaced. Renewable resources, like forests or fisheries, can grow back fairly quickly. However, we must use them carefully so they do not run out. Non-renewable resources, like minerals and fossils, take a very long time to form. Once we use them all, they cannot be replenished. Some resources are even called perpetual resources, such as sunlight and wind. These are available all the time and are not affected by how much we use them.

Humans and machines also provide important types of resources. Human resources are the skills, talent, and knowledge that people use to work. In business, these are the employees who finish important tasks. We also use capital, which includes durable goods like factory machinery. Capital can be tangible, like a physical tool you can touch. It can also be intangible, like a brand name or a patent. Even computers use resources, such as parts for storage and communication.

Because we use so many things, we must practice sustainable development. This means using resources carefully to meet our needs today. We must also make sure we do not hurt the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. One way to help is by following the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. This helps to extend how long our resources will last. If we use too much, we might face problems like environmental damage. Using resources wisely helps create prosperity and a better quality of life for everyone.
