Natural resource

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Natural resources are materials found in our environment. We use them to make almost everything we own. These resources can be separate things like air or water. They can also be changed into useful forms through industry. For example, we turn metal ores into metal. We also turn timber into wood products.

These resources have many different values to us. Some have commercial value for business. Others have scientific interest or cultural value. Some are even used for their beauty.

Scientists group these resources in several ways. One way is by their origin. Biotic resources come from life, such as fish or livestock. This group also includes fossil fuels like coal. These form from decayed organic matter. Abiotic resources come from non-living things. These include land, air, and heavy metals like gold or iron.

You can also group them by how they grow back. Renewable resources can be replaced by natural processes. Solar energy and wind are always available. However, even renewable resources can run out if we use them too fast.

People also look at how ready a resource is to use. Potential resources are known to exist but are not used yet. Petroleum in rocks is a good example. Actual resources are those we use right now with our technology. Some resources are called reserves. These are parts of a resource we can use profitably later. There are also stocks. These are resources we know about but cannot use yet because we lack the right technology.

Using these resources is called extraction. This can be a small task or a huge global industry. Extraction is the basis of the primary sector of the economy. It can bring much wealth to a country. But it can also cause problems. This is sometimes called the "resource curse." A sudden boom in money can cause inflation or corruption. It can even lead to social problems or civil wars.

Some countries like Norway use strong systems to manage this well.

Today, many people worry about the depletion of resources. Depletion means using them up until they are gone. This is a major focus for the United Nations. They want to reach sustainable development. This means meeting our needs now without hurting future generations. We must balance the needs of people and species today and in the future.
