Using these resources is called extraction. This can be a small task or a huge global industry. Extraction is the basis of the primary sector of the economy. It can bring much wealth to a country. But it can also cause problems. This is sometimes called the "resource curse." A sudden boom in money can cause inflation or corruption. It can even lead to social problems or civil wars.

For instance, hydrogen is considered a stock because we currently lack the necessary vehicles to use it.

Renewability is a critical way to distinguish between different types of resources. Renewable resources can be replenished naturally through environmental processes. In these cases, a resource is only renewable if the rate of replenishment exceeds the rate of consumption.
