These currents generate the magnetic field that surrounds our planet.

Earth has a very long and busy history. Our planet formed about 4.54 billion years ago. The Moon formed roughly 20 million years after that. Long ago, the continents moved and joined into supercontinents. One famous supercontinent was called Pangaea, which broke apart 180 million years ago. Another was called Rodinia, which began to break up 750 million years ago. About 66 million years ago, a meteorite hit the Earth. This event likely caused the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.

Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago. It grew from the solar nebula along with the Sun. The Moon formed about 20 million years later. Initially, the Earth was molten. The outer layer eventually cooled to form a solid crust. Volcanic activity and outgassing created the first atmosphere. Water vapor condensed to form the oceans. Around 4 billion years ago, self-replicating molecules likely appeared.

The continents have shifted many times over these billions of years. They have formed and broken apart into supercontinents. One such supercontinent was named Rodinia. It began to break apart about 750 million years ago. Another was named Pannotia, which broke up 540 million years ago. The most famous supercontinent was Pangaea, which broke up 180 million years ago.

Life on Earth has faced many major changes. About 530 to 540 million years ago, the Cambrian explosion occurred. This was a time when multicellular life forms began to multiply. During the Neoproterozoic era, Earth experienced "Snowball Earth." This means freezing temperatures covered much of the planet in ice. Since the Cambrian explosion, there have been five mass extinctions. The last major one occurred 66 million years ago. A meteorite collision likely caused the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. This event spared small animals like mammals.

Today, we are in the Holocene extinction event. Some scientists believe human activity is causing this. It is described as the fastest extinction event ever.

The atmosphere is essential for sustaining the ecosystem. It is a thin layer of gases held by gravity. It contains mostly nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor. The ozone layer is a vital part of this system. It depletes ultraviolet radiation from reaching the surface. This protects the DNA of living things.
