Nature is a word used to describe the whole physical world. It includes the laws and elements that make the universe work. This covers everything from living things to inanimate objects like rocks. We often use the word to talk about the natural environment. This usually means places like forests or oceans that humans have not changed much.

Many people see a difference between nature and things that are artificial. Artificial things are made by human minds or consciousness. Nature, however, includes things that change on their own. This includes the weather and the geology of our Earth.

Our planet has many moving parts that work together. The Earth's surface is divided into several tectonic plates. These plates migrate or move slowly over time. Inside the Earth, the core is very active. It has a solid inner part and a fluid outer part. The motion in the outer core creates electric currents. This process is called dynamo action. These currents generate the magnetic field that surrounds our planet.

The atmosphere also works as a system to help us. It is a layer of gases held by gravity. It contains nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor. The ozone layer in the atmosphere protects life from ultraviolet radiation.

People have studied the history of nature for a long time. The word nature comes from the Latin word natura. This word originally meant "birth" or essential qualities. Ancient Greek philosophers also used similar ideas to describe the world. In the 1600s, Isaac Newton wrote about the mathematical principles of nature. His work helped people see nature as a system of laws. Later, the Industrial Revolution changed how people viewed the natural world. Some saw it as sacred, while others saw it as a place for human history.

Earth has a very long and busy history. Our planet formed about 4.54 billion years ago. The Moon formed roughly 20 million years after that. Long ago, the continents moved and joined into supercontinents. One famous supercontinent was called Pangaea, which broke apart 180 million years ago. Another was called Rodinia, which began to break up 750 million years ago. About 66 million years ago, a meteorite hit the Earth. This event likely caused the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.

Nature connects to almost everything we see every day. When you look at a mountain, you are seeing geology. Geology is the study of the solid and liquid matter of Earth. When you feel the wind, you are experiencing weather. Weather is a chaotic system that happens in the lower atmosphere. Even the plants in your garden are part of the natural realm. Everything from the tiny plankton in the sea to the huge oceans is part of this system.
