Natural philosophy is a way of studying the world and the universe.

It focuses on nature and physical things. This study ignores any supernatural influence or gods. Instead, it uses research and reason to find answers. For a long time, this was how people studied everything. It covered many topics we call science today. This includes physics, biology, chemistry, and astronomy. Natural philosophy was the starting point for modern science. It helped people move from stories to research.

This way of thinking works by looking for causes. In ancient Greece, thinkers tried to explain how things worked. Some thought the world was made of tiny atoms. Others believed air was the main part of everything. Aristotle was a very important thinker in this field. He believed the world was orderly and predictable. He said every object has a special nature. This nature makes it behave in a certain way. He used four causes to explain why things happen. These include what an object is made of and its purpose.

History shows us how this idea grew over time. The term was used since the time of Aristotle. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it was one of many branches of philosophy. It was not a specialized field back then. The first specialist was Jacopo Zabarella in 1577. He worked at the University of Padua. Later, in 1687, Isaac Newton wrote a famous book. Its title was Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. This book showed how people used the term in the 17th century. It helped describe the mathematical principles of nature.

Many famous people have shaped these ideas. In Germany, a movement called Naturphilosophie became popular. Thinkers like Goethe, Hegel, and Schelling were part of it. They saw nature as a giant living organism. This was different from others who saw it as a machine. In 1834, William Whewell changed things again. He was a thinker at the University of Cambridge. He suggested the word "scientist" to replace older terms. This helped separate science from philosophy as a new study. It gave people a specific name for their work.

Today, we see the links to what we learn in school. Most of natural philosophy has become modern science. Many topics moved into their own special groups. For example, physics and chemistry are now separate. However, some old names still remain today. At the University of Oxford, they still use the term. They use it for certain degree titles in physics. This shows how much the old ideas still matter. We are still exploring the universe just like they did.
