It covers many different ways of thinking about the world. Some people use the term to mean the worldview of Islam itself. This includes ideas about how the universe was created. Other people use it to describe schools of thought under Islamic empires. One specific group is called Falsafa. This group focused on ideas from Greek thinkers like Aristotle.

Another group is called Kalam. This group used reasoning to talk about religious questions.

These thinkers had different ways to find the truth. Kalam used a method called dialectical reasoning. This means people used speech and arguments to find answers. Some groups in Kalam argued about free will. Others believed in fate, which is the idea that things are meant to happen. Falsafa worked differently by using math and logic.

These thinkers often tried to make religion and reason work together. They wanted to see if Greek ideas fit with Islamic teachings. Some thinkers, like the Brethren of Purity, used these ideas to explain their view of the world. They combined many different ideas into one system.

This way of thinking grew during a time called the Islamic Golden Age. This period lasted from about the 8th to the 12th centuries. Al-Kindi was one of the first major philosophers in the 9th century. Later, thinkers like Avicenna and Averroes became very famous.

Avicenna started a school called Avicennism. Averroes started a school called Averroism. These men helped spread knowledge through their books. The Golden Age was a time of great learning and many new ideas. It helped connect different cultures through thought.

There were many important names and places in this history. In the west, philosophy was studied in places like al-Andalus and the Maghreb. In the east, it continued in the Ottoman Empire and the Mughal Empire.

One thinker named Ibn Khaldun wrote about the philosophy of history. Another person, Al-Ghazali, wrote a book that criticized some philosophers. He wrote a work called The Incoherence of the Philosophers. Even with these debates, the work was huge. A researcher named Hans Daiber found over 9,525 works on this subject by 1998. Later lists added even more books and articles.

These ideas did not stay in one place. They had a huge impact on Christian Europe.

Arabic texts were translated into Latin. This helped change how people in Europe studied science and the mind. The study of logic also grew because of these Muslim thinkers. They created new ways to use logic, such as Avicennian logic. Interest in these ideas grew again during the Nahda movement. This was a period of awakening in the late 19th century. Today, people all over the world still study these deep thoughts.
