Astronomy

Astronomy is the science of everything beyond our atmosphere. It studies objects like planets, moons, and stars. Scientists also look at nebulae, which are clouds of gas, and galaxies. They study big events like supernova explosions and gamma ray bursts. Some experts study cosmology, which looks at the entire universe.

To do this, they use math, physics, and chemistry. These tools help explain how space objects began and how they change.

Learning about space happens in many different ways. Astronomers use math to track how planets move. They use physics to understand the behavior of stars. They also use chemistry to study what objects are made of.

Sometimes, they use a tool called a spectroscope. This tool helps them see the different elements in stars. By looking at light, they can learn the secrets of the cosmos.

People have watched the stars for thousands of years. Ancient groups like the Egyptians and Babylonians made careful notes. The Maya and Greeks also studied the night sky.

Early people used the stars to make calendars for farming. In Egypt, sites like Nabta Playa helped track the Nile floods.

These early observations laid the foundation for all science today.

History shows how our ideas about space have changed. For a long time, many believed Earth was the center of the universe. This was called the geocentric model. Later, Nicolaus Copernicus proposed a heliocentric model. This idea said the planets and Earth move around the Sun.

In the 1600s, Galileo used a telescope to see the phases of Venus. This helped prove that the Sun was the center.

Modern astronomy uses amazing technology to see further than ever. We use huge telescopes to find new planets and stars. In 1781, William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus.

In 1912, Henrietta Leavitt found a way to measure star distances. We can now see beautiful things like the Crab Nebula.

Even people at home can help. Amateur astronomers often find new comets in our sky.
