Astronomer

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An astronomer is a scientist who studies the world outside of Earth. They focus on many different things in space. These include stars, planets, moons, comets, and even huge galaxies. Some astronomers study how stars are born or how they change over time. Others look at how galaxies form or study the whole universe. This study of the entire universe is called physical cosmology.

Astronomers cannot usually perform experiments like scientists in a lab. This is because the objects they study are very far away. Instead, they rely on observations to learn new things. They collect light, waves, or tiny particles like cosmic rays. They use special tools to measure things like the position of a star. This work is called astrometry. They also use photometry to study light and spectroscopy to study light waves.

In the past, astronomy and astrophysics were different. Astronomy was about describing what things looked like in the sky. Astrophysics used physical laws to explain why those things happened. Today, these two terms are used for the same job. People often call them astronomers and astrophysicists interchangeably. Famous people like Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler helped shape this science.

Professional astronomers are highly educated and often have a PhD. A PhD is a top level of university study. They spend most of their time doing research. They also teach classes or build new tools. In 2024, the American Astronomical Society had about 8,200 members. The International Astronomical Union has about 12,700 members from 92 countries. Many use a CCD camera to take long, deep pictures of space.

Many people enjoy astronomy as a hobby. These people are called amateur astronomers. Some just like to look at the stars from their chairs. Others use science-grade telescopes to make their own discoveries. They might even help professional scientists with their research. Many cities have clubs that host star parties for everyone. The Astronomical Society of the Pacific is the largest group for these enthusiasts.
