Extragalactic astronomy

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Extragalactic astronomy is a very big field of study. It looks at objects outside our Milky Way galaxy. Most stars live in our own galaxy. But there are many other star groups far away. Scientists call these groups galaxies.

This science helps us see the whole universe. It covers things that galactic astronomy does not. Studying these distant objects is a huge job. It helps us understand how the universe works.

This field works by looking at different distances. Some galaxies are very close to us. We call this the Local Group. Scientists can study these close galaxies in great detail. They look at things like star groups. They also look at old star remains.

Better tools let us see much further now. We can see objects near the edge of the universe. This helps us see how galaxies change. We can study how they act and touch.

In the past, the first galaxies began to form. This happened in the first hundreds of millions of years. Huge clouds of gas and dust collapsed. This collapse gave birth to the first stars. We call these Population III stars.

These stars were very large. They were 300 to 3 million solar masses. Their mass meant they had very short lives. They lived quickly and then they died.

Scientists use many tools to find these facts. They use math and models to learn things. They also use tools to watch the sky.

They study things called Active Galactic Nuclei. These help us learn about super massive black holes. We can also study dark matter this way. Scientists look for gravitational lensing and gravitational waves. These things are hard to see in our galaxy. They are easier to study far away.

Think about how much is out there. Our Milky Way is just one small part. Extragalactic astronomy shows us the rest of the map. It is like looking past your own house. You start to see the whole wide world.

We learn about the history of everything. We see how the universe grew from gas. It is a way to see the past. We are looking at the very edge of space.
