Most stars are in our own Milky Way galaxy. But there are many other star groups far away. We call these groups galaxies.

Scientists study these distant groups. This field of study is extragalactic astronomy. It looks at things outside our own galaxy.

Some galaxies are very close to us. We call these the Local Group. Scientists can study these close galaxies in great detail. They look at things like star groups and old star remains.

We can also see objects near the edge of the universe. This helps us learn how galaxies change over time. We can study things like dark matter. We can also study Active Galactic Nuclei. These are centers that help us learn about big black holes.

Long ago, the first galaxies formed. This happened in the first hundreds of millions of years. Huge clouds of gas and dust collapsed. This made the first stars. These are called Population III stars. They were very big. They had short lives. They were 300 to 3 million times the mass of our Sun.

Scientists use math and tools to study these things.
