It looks at everything inside our galaxy. This is different from extragalactic astronomy. That is the study of things outside our galaxy.

Our Milky Way is a well-studied place. However, some parts are hard to see. Cosmic dust blocks our view of some areas. This dust stops visible light from passing through. Scientists found new ways to see through it. They use radio astronomy and infrared astronomy. These tools let us map gas and dust.

There are many ways to study the galaxy. Some people study the bulge. This is the area around the center. Others study the disk. The disk is the flat plane where most objects sit. Some look at the nucleus. This is the region near a black hole. We call that black hole Sagittarius A*. Scientists also study how stars move. This is called kinematics. They also study stellar content. This means they look at the types of stars. They even study the halo. The halo is a large area around the galaxy.
