Galactic astronomy

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Galactic astronomy is a special way to study space. It focuses on the Milky Way galaxy. This is our home in the universe. It looks at everything inside our galaxy. This is different from extragalactic astronomy. That field studies everything outside our galaxy.

Galactic astronomy helps us understand our cosmic neighborhood. It is a very big job.

Scientists study the galaxy in many ways. They look at the disk first. The disk is the flat plane where most objects sit. They also study the bulge. This is the area around the center. Some look at the nucleus. This is the region near a black hole. That black hole is named Sagittarius A*.

They even study the halo. The halo is a large area around the galaxy.

Learning about the galaxy was once very hard. Some parts are hidden from our eyes. Cosmic dust blocks our view. This dust stops visible light from passing through. In the 20th century, things changed. Scientists developed radio astronomy. They also used infrared astronomy. They even used submillimetre astronomy.

These new tools let us map gas and dust for the first time.

There are many specific topics to learn. Some experts study abundances. This means they find where heavy elements live. Others study kinematics. This is the study of how stars move. Scientists also look at stellar content. This means they count the types of stars. They might study globular clusters. These are groups of stars in the halo.

They may also study open clusters.

Think of the galaxy like a giant city. Galactic astronomy is like studying the streets and buildings. We look at the stars like the lights in the windows. The gas and dust are like the fog in the air. We use special tools to see through that fog. This helps us see the whole city clearly.

It is a wonderful way to explore our home.
