Zone of Avoidance

The sky holds many secrets from deep space.

Most of the sky is easy to see. But one part is very hard to study. We call this the Zone of Avoidance. This area is hidden by our own Milky Way. Our galaxy is shaped like a flat disk. It is full of stars and thick dust. This dust blocks our view of the distant universe.

This gap makes it hard to map all galaxies.

This zone works like a thick curtain. The dust and gas in our galaxy cause extinction. This means the light from far away gets blocked. When we use visible light, we lose much of the view. The Milky Way hides about 20% of the extragalactic sky. This makes many galaxy lists incomplete near the center. Sometimes, stars in our galaxy look like far galaxies. This can confuse the people looking through telescopes. It is a hard job to see what is truly there.

People have studied this hidden area for a long time. In 1878, an astronomer named Richard Proctor wrote a paper. He called it the Zone of Few Nebulae. He was looking at a list made by John Herschel. Later, scientists found better ways to look through the dust. In 1968, Paolo Maffei found two huge galaxies. These were named Maffei 1 and Maffei 2. He found them by looking at infrared light. This was a big step for space study.

Modern tools help us see much more now. Infrared light can pass through the dust more easily. Projects like 2MASS and IRAS use this light. Radio waves work even better for this task. The Milky Way is effectively transparent to radio waves. Scientists look for a special signal from hydrogen. This is called the 21 cm spin-flip emission line. Using this, they found Dwingeloo 1 in 1994. They also found Dwingeloo 2 in 1996.

These discoveries help us understand the whole sky. For example, we found the Vela Supercluster. A supercluster is a very large group of galaxies. It sits near a place called the Great Attractor. Even with these tools, some parts remain tricky. About 10% of the sky is still hard to survey. This is because stars still look like distant galaxies. We are still learning about the hidden parts of space.
