Dark nebula

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A dark nebula is a special kind of cloud in space. These are also called absorption nebulae. They are part of huge molecular clouds. These clouds are very thick and dense. This density blocks the light from objects behind them. You might see stars or other bright nebulae being hidden. They look like dark spots in the sky.

These clouds work by blocking visible light. Tiny dust grains live in the coldest parts. These grains are smaller than a micrometer. They are coated in frozen nitrogen and carbon monoxide. This coating stops light from passing through. Other things like molecular hydrogen are also there. These gases are mostly transparent to light.

Scientists use special tools to see these clouds. They use radio waves or infrared light. This type of light can pass through the dust. It lets astronomers see what is hidden inside. They can find stars forming in the inner regions. They can also find masers inside the clouds. These are bright sources of energy.

Dark nebulae have very irregular shapes. They do not have clear outer edges. Sometimes they look like winding snakes. Some small, lonely dark nebulae are Bok globules. Large groups of them are called complexes. The Coalsack Nebula is a famous example. You can also see the Great Rift. These look like dark patches in the Milky Way.

You can even see some with your own eyes. This happens if there are few stars in the way. The Coalsack and Great Rift are very large. They appear as dark shapes against the bright Milky Way. People sometimes call these dark cloud constellations. They are easy to spot in the night sky. It is like seeing a shadow in a bright room.
