Interstellar cloud

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Huge clouds float in the space between stars. These are called interstellar clouds. They are much denser than the space around them. This space is called the interstellar medium.

These clouds are made of gas, plasma, and cosmic dust. They can form from a red giant star. This happens when the star is in its later life. Scientists find these clouds very important to study.

Clouds can be many different things. Some are called H I regions if the hydrogen is neutral. Others are H II regions if the hydrogen is ionized.

An H II region is made of plasma. Some clouds are also called molecular clouds. These are very dense clouds. The size and temperature change how the cloud looks. A cloud can be cold or it can be hot.

Scientists use light to see what is inside. They look at electromagnetic radiation. This includes radio waves and visible light.

They also look at gamma rays. Large radio telescopes scan the sky for certain frequencies. These frequencies show which molecules are present. A high peak in a frequency means there is a lot of that molecule. This helps us map the cloud.

There were big surprises found in these clouds. Before 2001, scientists thought reactions were very slow. They thought the low temperature stopped much from happening.

But they found organic molecules like methanol and formaldehyde. These were unexpected in such cold space. This means chemical reactions happen faster than we thought. Scientists study these gas-phase reactions in the CRESU experiment.

Some clouds move at very high speeds. These are called high-velocity clouds, or HVCs. They move faster than the rotation of the Milky Way.

These clouds have a velocity greater than 90 km s−1. One example is the Magellanic Stream. They might be left over from when the galaxy formed. They might also be pulled from other galaxies. They often have fewer heavy elements than normal clouds.
