Emission nebula

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bright clouds of gas glow in space. These are called emission nebulae.

They are very important parts of our universe. These clouds are made of gas that has been ionized. Ionization means the gas is given energy. This energy makes the gas emit light. This light can be many different colors.

Scientists study these clouds to learn about space.

How does a nebula start to glow? It happens because of nearby stars. These stars send out ultraviolet photons. These are tiny bits of very high energy. The photons hit the gas in the cloud. This causes the ionization we talked about. This step makes the gas light up.

This process makes them much brighter than reflection nebulae. Reflection nebulae do not glow on their own.

There are different ways these clouds form. Some are called H II regions. These are places where new stars are born. Young, massive stars provide the energy there. Other clouds are called planetary nebulae. These come from stars that are dying. The dying star throws off its outer layers. Then, its hot core ionizes that gas.

This creates a beautiful glowing shell.

We can use science to find out what is inside. Most nebulae are about 90% hydrogen. The rest is helium, oxygen, or nitrogen. Hydrogen often makes a nebula look red. This is due to the Balmer series. The Balmer series is a set of light lines.

If there is more energy, we see blue or green. This happens when other elements get ionized. Astronomers look at spectra to see these elements. This helps them know the chemical content.

Many famous nebulae are in our sky. The North America Nebula is in the north. It is also called NGC 7000. The Veil Nebula is in the constellation Cygnus. In the south, we find the Lagoon Nebula. This is also known as M8 or NGC 6523. The Orion Nebula is M42. The Carina Nebula is NGC 3372.

Some nebulae have dark spots from dust. This dust blocks the light from the gas.
