Great Attractor

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Great Attractor is a huge center of gravity in space. It sits in a region called intergalactic space. This pull affects the Laniakea Supercluster of galaxies. This supercluster includes our Milky Way galaxy. It also includes about 100,000 other galaxies. The pull is very strong. It comes from a large concentration of mass.

Scientists see this pull by watching how galaxies move. Most galaxies move away from us as the universe grows. This movement is called redshift. However, some galaxies move differently. They show peculiar velocities. This means they move toward the Great Attractor. These speeds range from +700 km/s to -700 km/s. The direction of the movement depends on the angle.

People first noticed strange movements in 1973 and 1978. Alan Dressler named the Great Attractor in 1987. He used many years of redshift surveys. These surveys provided a large set of data. Scientists used this data to make maps. They found our Milky Way moves toward the constellation Centaurus. It moves at about 600 km/s.

The Great Attractor is hard to see directly. Our own galaxy blocks the view. This area is called the Zone of Avoidance. It lies in the direction of Triangulum Australe and Norma. The distance is between 150 and 250 million light-years. X-ray tools help us look through the dark. They found the Norma Cluster at the center. This cluster has many large, old galaxies.

The Great Attractor is the core of Laniakea. Laniakea spans 500 million light-years. It includes the Virgo and Hydra-Centaurus superclusters. Some say the Great Attractor is moving toward the Shapley Attractor. The Shapley Attractor is a much larger pull. This might mean the Great Attractor is part of a bigger structure. It helps hold the Laniakea supercluster together for now.
