Peculiar galaxy

Most galaxies have a regular shape. But some look very strange. We call these peculiar galaxies.

A peculiar galaxy has an odd size or shape. About five to ten percent of galaxies are peculiar. These galaxies are very important to study. They help us learn how all galaxies grow and change over time.

Many of these odd shapes happen because of gravity. This occurs when two or more galaxies come close to each other. Their gravity pulls on the other galaxy. This pull causes the shapes to become irregular. Scientists think many peculiar galaxies form when galaxies collide. This way of working makes the term 'interacting galaxy' almost the same as 'peculiar galaxy.'

These collisions cause many things to happen inside the galaxies. One thing is a starburst. This is a period of very fast star formation. These galaxies also often have an active galactic nucleus, or AGN. This is a bright center with a supermassive black hole. These bright centers and new stars make the galaxies look blue. They are a bit bluer than normal galaxies.

In 1966, a man named Arp shared his work. He made the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. He wanted to use these odd shapes to study real galaxies. He felt these shapes showed how galaxies change. These galaxies are often too far away to test directly. He used these pictures to analyze the nature of galaxies. His work helps us see how they act.

We can identify these galaxies by their names. Scientists add a "p" or "pec" after the Hubble type. This tells us the galaxy is peculiar. One example is ESO 162-17. It is a peculiar galaxy in the constellation Carina. It is 40 million light-years away.

Looking at these galaxies is like looking at a map of how the universe grows.
